There are many important questions when it comes to warranties. With those questions come more than a few misconceptions. Many car owners feel as though warranties are a little mysterious and difficult to understand, but you don't have to feel this way. As it turns out there are easy ways for you to learn more about car warranties and in the process demystify them to a large degree.

Get Warranty Help from Your Car Dealership

The first stop towards demystifying the typical warranty is to ask your car dealership to help you with any points that you may not understand in your warranty. Of course, you will have to read your warranty carefully and understand as much as possible.

Frequently, people are a little surprised to learn that car warranties do vary by the make and model of a car. In fact, they can vary a great deal. Perhaps the largest common way in which car warranties vary is the length of the warranty. Some car companies offer longer warranties than others in an effort to stand out from the pack and show that they feel their car is better built than their competition.

Does this strategy work? In short, yes. Many consumers respond quite positively to being offered a longer warranty. For example, Hyundai made a big impact when the company began offering powertrain coverage of 10 years or 100,000 miles. Likely, as a result, GM and Chrysler both began offering powertrain coverage of 5 years or 100,000 miles.

There is one particular way in which warranties are very similar. Car warranties can be quite comprehensive, minus wear and tear parts such as tires and break pads. However, if intentional misuse or lack of care is exhibited, this may void a given aspect of coverage. Further, if the driver modifies the car with new non-factory parts, this will also likely void out the warranty.

Warranties are a key part of the automotive industry, and they serve to give consumers significant peace of mind. In recent years, consumers have seen car warranties increase in length, as car companies jockey for position in a competitive market.
